Guild Scrip, or “Guilders” as the locals call it, is Malifaux’s paper currency. Lifers and contractors alike come into Malifaux with an allotted amount of scrip in their pockets, and the Guild immediately tries to separate the scrip from its owners. These multi-coloured bills have the Ram’s head on one side and a woodcut of the Governor General on the other (lest Malifaux’s residents forget who’s in charge).
Earthside currency is valueless to Malifaux residents, as it cannot be used or exchanged in Guild-run establishments. Because of the Guild’s markup on most necessities, Mal-Siders often exchange goods and services through barter. Whether the exchange is a dozen eggs for plowing a field or something more powerful, like two Soulstones for the landlord’s murder, barter keeps transactions “off the books” and scrip in individuals’ pockets. Contractors use scrip to pay down their debts to the Guild, but few are capable of earning enough scrip through legitimate means to return Earthside inside of the two years the Guild assures them is possible.
