Malifaux is crucial to the modern world due to the unique mineral that can be mined there. The potent energy of Soulstone can be harnessed in a variety of ways; most important, though, is its use in amplifying magical processes. This energy represents the ability to realize one’s will. It is the power to topple mountains and pull the moon from the sky. It is the strength to vanquish enemies and to manifest the imagination’s greatest whim.
No known power can resist the feats Soulstones enable, and this is the reason for the desperate struggle to control Malifaux. Despite the Guild’s heavy-handed efforts, other organizations have secured access to this precious mineral, allowing them to resist the Guild occupation.
Like precious gemstones, Soulstones are graded on quality. Only the highest grade Soulstones are suitable as sorcerer aids. Lesser grades of Soulstone are used in alchemical reactions, medical tinctures, exotic wines, and even designer perfumes.
A typical Soulstone is milky white in colour, but a wide assortment of variations form naturally. Impurities in the stone can provide for various shades as well as differing magical properties. One of the most famous Soulstones is known as the Gorgon’s Tear. This large stone is bright green in colour and reportedly possesses properties quite unlike typical Soulstones. The Gorgon’s Tear is particularly renowned for the curse it allegedly bears.
Soulstones are named in reference to their Death Effect. When depleted of their energies, they can be recharged by being in the presence of an individual when death occurs. This was an alarming discovery which had numerous theological and existential ramifications. Further, a secondary Soulstone market has focused on depleted Soulstones. Individuals known as Harvesters buying dim Soulstones and reselling them, recharged.
